Big voice – silent tomb

Several years ago I was hanging with a jazz-cat friend of mine named Johnny (not to be confused with Jimmy Johns). He was paging through club listings and came across an announcement that Luther Vandross was coming to the Landmark Theater.

That would be quite a show he said. We decided to get tickets.

Johnny is in a band called Eye Level, which cut a CD at Skaneateles’ Sub Cat Studios on Fennell Street. He is a member of some union, so when the name brand acts come to town, say “The Temptations,” and they need to pick up musicians, he blows his sax.

I was not a Luther fan, but I had seen a program on how he arranged the voices for his music...

Little brothers

“Thank heaven for little girls” was a popular song at my house, as I had four brothers and no sisters. Well, it was popular with my parents, not my siblings.

My three older brothers were legendary bad boys, and then I was born. I had this calming influence on my family; well, at least my younger brother, Steve, who was my constant companion growing up. We sort of buddied up to avoid the wrath of the other three wise guys. But, Steve really didn’t need my help, as he was the little brother.

There is something about the youngest in that they often have all the smarts of the others and then some. Steve was one clever kid. And then he was really funny...
