Bands Against Bombs - A benefit for the Syracuse Peace Council

07/16/08
Five local musical groups will perform at “Bands Against Bombs,” a benefit for the Syracuse Peace Council, from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 20 at the Dewittshire Tavern, 3010 Erie Blvd. East. All proceeds will support the Peace Council’s work to educate, agitate and organize for peace and social justice here in Central New York.
The featured performers are Colleen Kattau, singer and songwriter, described in a recent Syracuse New Times cover article as “a protest singer, a passionate, poetic folkie in the tradition of Joan Baez, with a voice that sometimes evokes Joni Mitchell.”
Miss E performs an eclectic mix of rock, funk, blues and jazz with a little folk thrown in for good measure.
Ashley Cox delivers passionate music that, at times, flows like a raindrop, other times like a tidal wave, but always immerses her listeners in absolute honesty and intensity. Ashley has toured with the likes of MeShell Ndegeocello and received the 1997 Syracuse Area Music Award for Best New Artist.
CD-R (Chris Townsend, Ric Brush, Denn Bunger), and Lisa and Leo (Lisa Henderson, Leo Boylan).
“Music has always played such a critical role in movements for peace and social justice, from the early union movement to the civil rights struggle and anti-war movement,” notes Peace Council staffperson Andy Mager. “This is a great way to raise awareness, inspire people to take action and raise much needed funds for the Peace Council,” he continues.
Admission is $5 to $20 on a sliding scale and food will be available for purchase from Sparkytown.
The Syracuse Peace Council is the nation’s oldest, grassroots peace and social justice organization. For information, call 472-5478 or see peacecouncil.net.
