Ferdie Pacheco to exhibit paintings in 'Cuse

Ferdie Pacheco visits the ‘Cuse Nov. 21 and 23 for the opening of an exhibition of his paintings, Pacheco: From the 5th Street Gym to Ghandi, at the Brian Wood Art Gallery, 201 Wolf Street:


Known as Muhammad Ali’s “Fight Doctor,” Ferdie Pacheco is an internationally acclaimed artist, author of 14 books, humanitarian, winner of two Emmy awards, playwright and humanitarian.

His painting of Ghandi has been selected to be the 2009 stamp for the United Nations Day of Nonviolence. He is a 21st century Renaissance man, raised in Ybor City, Tampa Florida’s latin quarter, as the son of a pharmacist who served the immigrant community, Pacheco decided at 14 to become a medical doctor. He financed his medical education through his artwork and established a practice in Miami serving the immigrant population.

Following another passion, boxing, he became the doctor for the local 5th Street Gym-a training ground for aspiring fighters- where he met a young Muhammad Ali. He stayed with Ali for 17 years as cornerman and personal physician and with whom he remains close friends. Pacheco was responsible for introducing many safety measure now implemented in the ring. He went on to become a noted boxing commentator for HBO, NBC, and Univisions.


Pacheco’s paintings
His artwork reflects his passionate life and deep caring for people. Each is characterized by his imaginative use of color and design. His famous faces are executed in a fauvist style. His work has won the Gold Medal and First Prize in Tonneins, France and the First Prize, Best colorist at Musee Du Luxembourg.

This show, “Pacheco: From the 5th Street Gym to Ghandi” marks a new direction for the Brian Wood Art Gallery, known as Brian’s Custom Framing and Art Gallery. This is a third generation business that is evolving much like the artist Pacheco.
