Girls Lakers take out J-E, Homer

If ever a blast of winter weather might have proved helpful to anyone, the Cazenovia girls basketball team would qualify.
The weather postponement of the Lakers’ Jan. 8 home game against Jordan-Elbridge gave the team a chance to regroup and practice hard in the wake of a loss to Bishop Ludden earlier that week.
So when the J-E game did get made up last Monday night at Buckley Gym, the rested, energetic Lakers took it to the Eagles from the start and won by a score of 63-38.
As is usually the case, Cazenovia’s defense lay a solid foundation, holding J-E in check while it steadily worked toward a 30-16 halftime advantage.
But a larger story on this night was the way the Lakers’ offense showed improvement, putting up one of its highest point totals of the season to make sure the Eagles couldn’t come back.
Kiley Evans poured in 21 points, and she got strong support as Ashley Stec and Ellen Burr both hit double figures with 12 points apiece. Taylor Malmsheimer earned six points, too. Molly Hourigan led J-E with 10 points.
A night later, at Homer, the Lakers made it back-to-back wins, trouncing the Trojans 65-33. From the time it started on a 19-4 surge, Cazenovia was in complete control, only loosening up its defense in the third quarter in an otherwise strong performance.
Evans, who had 18 points, set the pace for an attack where Burr earned 11 points, Lindsey Smith stepped up for nine points and Stec got eight points.
When the Lakers (8-2) host Solvay Thursday night, it will be the team's third outin in four nights.
