More on DuBois:
DuBois began the project of photographing his family in 1984. Since then there have been both happy and hard times, including a nearly fatal fall from a commuter train by his father, and his mother’s subsequent breakdown and hospitalizations. According to DuBois, “The pallor of my mother’s skin, the glare of my father’s gaze, and the tactile communication between my sister and nephew constitute a complex and resonant picture of family ties.” This series looks not only at Dubois’ family, but at the act of placing life under the constant gaze of the camera.

DuBois received his M.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute. His work has been exhibited internationally at galleries such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York; J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles; and PARCO Gallery in Tokyo, among many others. His work is included in the permanent collections at SFMOMA in San Francisco; The Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.; the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and others. DuBois is currently a professor in the Department of Transmedia, part of Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts.
