Skaneateles family of artists featured in Aurora

Four of a kind
Grove opens season with artists Datz, Datz, Dugan and Harms May 4

Grove Gallery in Aurora, will present “Art In The Family,” an exhibition featuring work by artists Margot Datz, Stephen Datz, George Dugan and Rachel Harms.

In this show, familial association and local roots bring together the work of an intensely scrutinizing landscape painter, a semiotics based abstract painter, an ephemerally inspired whimsical painter/muralist and an allegory-influenced found-object sculptor.

Datz family gatherings (Stephen and Margot are siblings; Rachel is married to Stephen; George Dugan is married to Nina Datz who is Stephen and Margot’s sister). often include heated debates about Velasquez versus Caravaggio, Johns versus Rothko, or about who is the greatest sculptor of all time. Ultimately, however, the intensely debated passions always give way to a cross appreciation for art. Despite the diversity of context, inspiration and product there is almost a genetic predisposition to create – and create they do.

Margot Datz lives on Martha’s Vineyard; George Dugan hails from Homer; Rachel Harms and Stephen Datz live in Skaneateles with their 7 year-old daughter Lily, an aspiring artist.

“Art In The Family” will be at Grove from May 4 through June 1. Anna Baxter at 364-7472 or at for more information.
