Celebrate the Musical Heritage: Tipperary Hill Music Festival

09/19/07
The Tipperary Hill Music Festival is a celebration of the neighborhood’s rich and diverse musical heritage. It is a free one day festival for all ages, a not for profit endeavor that benefits the community. This year’s festival will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22 at the Pass Arboretum (across from the Avery/Salisbury/Whittier Avenue/Burnet Park entrance). The rain backup location is the Burnet Park Ice Rink Pavilion.
Festival organizers Ed Zacholl, Mike Lounsbery and other musicians with ties to the Tipperary Hill area all share a love for music and have attended and played at many music festivals across the country. The idea to have a music festival in their own neighborhood was kicked around for a few years, but really got off the ground when the concept was shared with Syracuse Parks and Recreation Commissioner Pat Driscoll. With enthusiastic support from Commissioner Driscoll and the residents of Tipperary Hill, the dream of a first annual event has now become a reality.
The event is sponsored by Syracuse Parks and Recreation, The Tipperary Hill Neighborhood Association, the Cultural Resources Council and various other sponsors.
The music will, of course, pay homage to the Irish roots of the Tipperary Hill Neighborhood, but the line-up will also be diverse like the neighborhood is today. Main stage acts will include Grupo Pagan, The Causeway Giants, The Z-Bones and The Tipp Hillbillies. Side stage acts will include Mike McClelland, Maria DeSantis and Mark Copani, The Tom Dooley Choraliers and Billy Delaney.
There will be local food and craft vendors, including music instruction and hand-made instrument sales. There will be a Kid’s Tent with children’s activities, including a “Learn How to Plant a Tree” activity for youngsters.
Two “Tipperary Hill Music Festival Legacy Awards” will be presented - one to The Tom Dooley Choraliers, who have sung at Tipperary Hill events for decades, and one to Mario DeSantis and Family. Many local Tipperary Hill musicians took lessons at the DeSantis Music Schoolhouse when it was located in the neighborhood on West Genesee Street.
Those attending from the neighborhood are encouraged to bring a chair and walk over to Pass Arboretum. Parking will be available in Burnet Park and at local schools and churches with designated signage.
