Lucky Central New York audiences won’t have to wait for “Grease” to open on Broadway. Theatre ‘90’s production of the musical celebration of high school in the 1950’s opens July 13 in the New Times Theater, NY State Fairgrounds in Geddes.

“Grease” takes a look at the dress, manners, morals and music of teenagers at the beginning of the rock ‘n’ roll era. The plot revolves primarily around the attraction between greaser Danny Zuko (Chris Kimpel) and virtuous Sandy Dumbrowski (Kim Panek).

The musical opens with the most colorful members of Rydell High School’s class of ‘59 eating lunch in the cafeteria on the first day of fall classes. Sandy, who is new in town, shares details of her summer romance with the Pink Ladies: Jan (Jenny Pearson), Marty (Brianna Pierce), Frenchie (Samantha Rey) and Betty Rizzo (Kara Tripoli).

At the same time Danny, leader of the Burger Palace Boys: Roger (Andy Pollock), Doody (Dylan Montrond), Sonny (Stephfond Brunson) and Kenicke (Brandon Martin), brags about his summer love conquest. When they bump into each other, Sandy is happy to find her summer love again, while Danny blows her off under the guise of being too cool.

Completing the cast are Jordan Westfall as Eugene Florczyk, Andrea Soule as Patty Simcox, Jessie Pardee as Cha-Cha DiGregorio and a large ensemble of singers and dancers.

“Grease” inspires a wave of nostalgia with scenes at the senior picnic, the prom and the pajama party where the girls experiment with cigarettes and pierced ears while the boys are busy daydreaming about easy girls and cool cars.

The show features Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey songs including "Summer Nights," “We Go Together, “Born to Hand-Jive” and “Greased Lightnin’.”

“Grease” originated in Chicago in 1971, opened off-Broadway in early 1972 and moved to B’way in June 1972 where it played for 3,388 performances. The revival arrived two decades later, for a run of more than 1,500 performances.

The new revival starring the winners of television’s "”Grease: You’re the One that I Want” will open on Broadway in August. The 1978 film, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, was one of the most successful movie musicals of all time.

Theatre ‘90’s “Grease” is directed by Holly Wilson, choreographed by Linda Bell, with music direction by Kathy Tompkins.
