08/01/07
Presented by Alternative Movies and Events Aug. 8 at the Palace Theatre
On Wednesday, Aug. 8, meet quality singles from CNY in the latest, highly popular Speed Dating events. Afterwards, enjoy the martial arts epic “Chinese Ghost Story.”
Speed Dating is held inside the Palace Movie Theatre, 2384 James St., Eastwood. Check in for Speed Daters will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Speed Dating starts at approximately 7 p.m. and ends between 8 to 8:30 p.m. Groups are broken down by age groups determined by who signs up, usually in a 5 to 10-year age range. Each speed dater will have between 5 to 8 dates during the event, with rounds lasting between 5 to 8 minutes. Individuals must be 21-years or older to participate in Speed Dating.
While many younger people sign up for speed dating, this activity does appeal to all ages. 21 to 29, 31 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 on up to 65. There is an especially large number of sign-ups in all these age ranges.
For something different, walk-ins will be welcome at this event, but will be accommodated as we have room and spaces and on a first come, first serve basis. Pre-registration runs $30 and must be paid by the cut off Monday, Aug. 6, 5 p.m. Registration/payment at the door runs $40 per person, cash only. Save by pre-registering and will increase the chances of being included in this fun-filled event.
Following the Speed Dating, at 9 p.m. “A Chinese Ghost Story,” produced by Tsui Hark and directed by Ching Siu Tung, will be shown. It is a standout in the Hong Kong supernatural-action genre and spawned many sequels and copycats. It stars Leslie Cheung as Ning Tsei-Shen, a timid and likable tax collector. Looking for a place to stay the night, he comes upon a spooky abandoned temple occupied by a tough Taoist swordsman (Ma Wu). Despite his warnings, Tsei-Shen stays anyway. Later, he encounters a beautiful maiden (Joey Wang) who he quickly falls in love with. Unfortunately, she is a ghost who is being forced to trap men for an evil spirit who feeds on their souls.
“A Chinese Ghost Story” has been widely praised for infusing the genre with humor, action, romance and inventive special effects.
