The Unexpected Guest

05/23/07
A classic whodunit murder mystery will take the stage as Syracuse Stage's seventh production of its 34th season. Agatha Christie's The Unexpected Guest provides an intellectual puzzle for viewers, with a mystery that places suspicion on all of the characters as potential murderers. Directed by Robert Moss, The Unexpected Guest, sponsored by Alliance Bank and Inficon, is now running through June 10.
A name synonymous with intriguing whodunits, Christie delivers again with this thrilling murder mystery. Michael Starkwedder, a stranded motorist, goes to the nearest house looking for help, but finds a dead body. He soon discovers that each of the victim's dysfunctional family members has a motive for the killing. Laura Warwick, wife of the victim, finds solace with the stranger, and together they concoct an alibi. In true Christie style, this play is wrought with dramatic twists.
"This was the most difficult play I've ever had to direct," said Director Moss. "Almost all of the characters are lying about something, and you have to constantly remember who is saying what, who knows how much, who is concealing what, and what you want the audience to know at this or that moment."
The Unexpected Guest is sure to keep audiences guessing.
"We need to always remember who knows what and when, which is fun. It's like a juggling act. The joy for the audience is in putting it together as it steamrolls along," said Moss.
Tickets for The Unexpected Guest range in price from $22 to $45 and are available by calling the Syracuse Stage Box Office at 443-3275 or visiting the Web site: SyracuseStage.org.
