Madison County: Fuel program dealt blow
Martha E. Conway 09/08/08
Four days after receiving unanimous support from members of the Madison County Board of Supervisors’ Social and Mental Health Services Committee, a proposed stop-gap program for the county’s neediest residents hit roadblock.
Members of the Finance, Ways and Means Committee declined to put the proposition to the full Board of Supervisors after Chairman John M. Becker (R,C,I – Sullivan) cautioned committee members about starting a program the county will have to fund in perpetuity.
Personnel Director and Interim Budget Officer Mary Krause presented the resolution to FWM on behalf of Department of Social Services Commissioner Michael Fitzgerald, who was unable to attend the Aug. 29 meeting...

Madison County: Jobless rate up
Martha E. Conway 09/08/08
Employment and Training Department Director Lorraine Schmidtka reported to the Madison County Social and Mental Health Committee July 28 that unemployment numbers crept up to 5.2 percent in June, and she was predicting that number to high 5.5 percent when the July numbers were tallied by the state Department of Labor.
Schmidtka did not update the unemployment rate at the Social and Mental Health Committee’s August meeting, but said there were 1,000 visits to the center in July.
“Nothing unusual is going on, but we’re seeing a few more people,” Schmidtka said. “The rate … I think what we’re seeing is discouraged workers. We’re not in a seasonal unemployment time right now, so that’s not it. It’s a reflection of the general economy and where we are today...

If Bob Henry can get 10 people interested, he will be provided space at the Great Swamp Conservancy in Canastota to plant a community garden. According to Henry, another gardener may offer an additional 50 acres for that purpose, as well.
Gardeners may plant fruits, vegetables or flowers at their discretion, he said.
Gardening is a great way to enjoy fresh produce and flowers, but it¡¦s also a terrific way to meet new people and make friends, Henry said. People from all sorts of backgrounds can come together over a common goal.
Experienced gardeners can teach novices from their own wealth of knowledge.
Henry said the benefits of community gardening are many:

Massage therapy, a combination of science and art, provides a relaxing experience by artistic hand strokes on the body to rejuvenate the mind and body and eliminate stress scientifically.
“My work has multiple layers,” said Lynne Potteiger. “When a person comes to me for a massage, I really address the many layers of a person’s being, their condition. They are getting more than a massage.”

Cazenovia’s best kept secret flies under radar while getting things done
By Willie Kiernan

After the Cazenovia Area Planning Project filed a report back in 2002, it sat on a shelf destined to collect dust.
“After the CAPP plan, no one was pursuing what the communities wanted,” said Tom Clarke, CACDA Board Member.
What was needed was a catalyst, a mechanism to clear off the dust and get things moving.
“A catalyst takes things from the idea stage to a flow chart to a task list to maybe grants and an action item,” said Dave Lucas, CACDA Board Member...

What is park(ing) day in Syracuse?
09/05/08
On Friday Sept. 19, Syracuse will celebrate its second annual Park(ing) Day! Last year, the PATF converted one parking spot on Walton into a park. Trees, flowers, picnics and music erupted from our park(ing) spot. This year we plan to have FIVE spots throughout Downtown. We are looking for artists to design installations for these five spots.
So what exactly is Park(ing) Day?
- It is a way to increase the greenspace of Downtown Syracuse for a day.
- It is a way to create juxtopositions in a mundane routine.
- It can illustrate how the car has hijacked our pedestrian public realm.
- It can create spaces where people interact...

Action at Syracuse's Symphony Place
Ellen Leahy 09/04/08

City and University gather to discuss big leap or next step for connective corridor:
Syracuse University (SU) is hoping that if they build it - people will use it. “It” is the connective corridor.
Marilyn Higgins told the Syracuse Common Council on Thursday Aug. 28 that Syracuse University would guarantee the $2,000,000 promised by the state to create an interactive streetscape, outside Symphony Place (SP) in downtown Syracuse. SP is the tower across the street from the Hotel Syracuse that is being converted into 75 upscale apartments (to be completed this October, early November).

Canastota: Water lines going in
Margo Frink 09/03/08
Residents will have to find another local route if they want to avoid construction. A project that was supposed to be completed earlier this summer is scheduled to begin Sept. 8 and take about six weeks to complete.
The Onondaga County Water Authority has contracted water line replacement of Peterboro Street from Route 5 to the underpass by the skateboard park.
A meeting took place yesterday at village hall between Carpenter and members of OCWA and the state Department of Transportation “to make sure residents in the village are disrupted as little as possible,” Carpenter said. He said the DOT was present to make sure the work was done properly and traffic was controlled...
