Marcellus Rotarians holding tree sale

The holiday season is a time for giving.
As in years past, when residents give Marcellus Rotary a little money, they will receive a fresh cut white spruce tree for Christmas as part of the annual Christmas tree sale.
Proceeds from the sale go to benefit Rotary programs such as student scholarships, the youth exchange program, polio immunization and the clean water program to third world countries, said Helen Shaffer, secretary of the local chapter.
The sale will be held at 31 North St., Marcellus, where the sale has been held for many years regardless of who is living at the residence, said member Brian Parker.
“They’re cut the day of or the morning that we bring them in,” he said of the trees. “The whole key is try to get some fresh cut.”
The spruces are also reasonably priced — $22 for early orders and $24 for all others. All trees are 6 to 8 feet tall. The sale begins Friday Dec. 5 and goes until Sunday if there are any trees remaining.
“They go fast. A lot of times by the time we get to Sunday we’re sold out,” Shaffer said.
The sale isn’t just a fundraiser for Rotary. It is also an education experience for the community, she said. Over the years, members have found that some residents do not know what Rotary is. Along with giving a little holiday cheer, Shaffer said the fundraiser also raises awareness about the club and what the members are working toward.
“It’s a good way to educate people,” she said.
For residents who are elderly or need a little assistance with getting their tree home, Rotary member are also on hand to make deliveries.
“It’s nice to make it convenient for people in the community,” Shaffer said. “A lot of times we’ll deliver trees to the elderly.”
Occasionally, members will also set trees up for those who need help.
