St. Joe's installs visitor pass management system

02/20/09
St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center is now using a new visitor pass management system to identify and monitor visitors to the hospital. Visitors who enter the hospital's main lobby now will receive a visitor pass that includes their picture, destination, and date and time of their visit.

After hospital security staff and volunteers scan the visitor's driver's license, the visitor's information is automatically entered into a database. A visitor pass is printed on a label, which is then worn by the visitor for the duration of his or her visit.

Previously, visitor pass information was written by hand without the help of the electronic database. In addition, photos were not included on the visitor badges.

"The new system is intended to help increase everyone's safety," said Security Services Coordinator Tom Wentworth. "It's helpful for us to know who is visiting patients in the hospital and for hospital staff to be able to quickly identify folks as visitors."

With more than 800 visitors a day, the main lobby is constantly busy.

The new system, which is called People Track and developed by Open Tech, consists of four stations used to print passes. A visitor typically waits only a minute or two to receive a pass. Visitors attempting to walk directly into the main lobby are directed by a security officer to ask for a pass at the main desk.

"We've had a good response from the visitors," said Wentworth. "I think everybody recognizes that this system is in place to help all of us."
