B'ville carp tourney returns next week

Baldwinsville is looking for men and women to help weigh the anticipated tonnage of carp to be caught and released during its May 13 through 16 50-hour tournament. The village’s Red Mill Inn will host a training session for weigh marshals at 6 p.m. Tuesday May 12. Volunteers are needed around the clock and choose their own work schedule.

In addition to weighing the catch, there are a variety of other ways to experience Baldwinsville’s upcoming contest. The tournament week kicks off with a discussion led by CARP Tournament Series director and world class angler David Moore at 7 p.m. Monday May 11 in the Baldwinsville library community room where, throughout the week, visitors will find fishery displays, tournament information and aquariums provided by SUNY ESF.

Opening ceremonies on Paper Mill Island, complete with a parade led by bagpipers, drummers and Rotary exchange students, begins at 6 p.m. Wednesday May 13. Spectators will experience the sound of Baker High School’s vocal jazz group Silk ‘n Satin, watch as local dignitaries welcome anglers from around the world and witness competitors’ choosing of fishing sites.

Throughout the 50-hour competition, look for Baldwinsville’s large carp-shaped road signs. They designate entrances to public viewing areas where spectators can personally experience the excitement. Viewing sites include Lions Community Park, Duke Strache property (behind old Syroco plant on Route 48) and Mud Lock (near the Wegmans Good Dog Park) at Onondaga Lake Park. Sites are open during the entire competition.
