Van Buren: Trash collection days to change, other news

Erin Smith 07/14/09More articles
Van Buren officials have changed trash collection days from pick-up any day of the week to Mondays and Thursdays only in the town. The change will take effect within 90 days after a trash hauler renews their license with the town and will only effect residential developments east of Route 690 including Village Green, Seneca Knolls and Sun Meadows, as well as the Harbor Heights development.

Officials hope by limiting the days trash will be collected, the town will also see improved safety measures.

“We’re trying to limit the days trash cans and trucks are out on the street for safety and aesthetic purposes,” said Supervisor Claude Sykes.

While Sykes said most licensed haulers within the town didn’t have an issue with the new requirement, Joe Rivette of Tribute Trash said, as a small business owner, the change would restrict his ability to expand within the town.

“[The restriction] would be very detrimental to my business,” Rivette said. “Please don’t do this.”
Despite his pleas, the town board approved the measure in a 6-0 vote. Councilor Mary Frances Sabin was not present at the meeting.

Zone change approved
Van Buren officials have approved a zone change for the property at 7035 Van Buren Road, allowing the owner of the property to store small equipment and vehicles in an outdoor storage unit behind his building, which is in a gated area.

Fire district meeting
The Van Buren town board will meet with the four fire departments that serve the town at 7 p.m. July 23 at the town hall, corner of Ellsworth and Van Buren roads. Officials intend to discuss board officials’ recent meeting with the county, what the town's expectations are, where the fire departments stand, the proposed Warners and Memphis fire departments merger, why the reluctance to a town-wide merger and any other topics that may come up.

Public hearings
A public hearing regarding an extension of the lighting and drainage district for Sun Meadows will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday July 21 at the Van Buren town hall, corner of Ellsworth and Van Buren roads.

A second public hearing regarding an extension of the consolidated water district for three parcels along Commane Road in Harbor Heights will be held at 7:32 p.m. Tuesday July 21 at the town hall.

A third public hearing regarding the placement of stop signs in Harbor Heights will be held at 7:35 p.m. July 21 at the town hall. The stop signs are proposed for the corners of Dolphin and Waterfront drives, Dolphin Drive and Silversides Way, Silversides Way and Waterfront Drive, Sand Lance and Waterfront drives, Waterfront Drive and Silversides Way and Silversides Way and Lanyard Lane.

Jones Road, Route 48 stop sign temporary
The three-way stop signs that have been placed at the intersection of State Route 48 (State Fair Boulevard) and Jones Road are temporary. The state is repairing a dip in the road north of Walker Boulevard, which is the result of a new and larger drainage pipe that was installed last year. Once the road is repaved, the stop signs along Route 48 will be removed.
