Refreshed format for WSEN, WFBL

WSEN and WFBL listeners will soon hear a “freshening” in the stations’ format, said new owner Jim Johnson.

Johnson took over operations at the Baldwinsville stations Sept. 1, when his company, Leatherstocking Media, purchased the stations from Buckley Broadcasting. With nearly 30 years in the radio business, he purchased WSEN AM, FM and WFBL AM because of their proximity to his Oneida stations, WMCR AM and FM, and the stations’ similar format.

“I wanted something close that also worked with the Oneida stations,” Johnson said. “It was a perfect fit.”

With a belief that radio is returning to its community roots, Johnson said he planned to build upon the stations’ commitment to the communities served. He will also continue to look for opportunities for growth for the stations.

As far as changes at WSEN AM, FM and WFBL AM, he admits their will be some adjustments in the format including “freshening and changing” the image a little bit, but listeners will have to keep tuned in for more details. One change has already been implemented – WSEN AM 1050 is now playing “Golden Oldies.”

“There will be a few more changes coming and they're all very positive,” said Judy Kelly, the stations’ general manager. “Some [listeners] have already called to say thanks for the music on 1050 AM.”

Why the sale
According to Kelly, “like several other businesses this past year, we did find it necessary to cut some staff members in the past 12 months. But, we've gotten through the worst of times and I'm looking forward to the coming year.”

Kelly added that all employees were brought on board when the transfer of operations took place and the staff is anxious to take the stations to new heights.

“There's a renewed energy in the building,” she said. “Take a listen and see what you think.”

WSEN FM 92.1 plays classic hits from roughly 1968 to 1985, and WSEN AM 1050 and WFBL AM 1390 both broadcast the "Golden Oldies" music from the 1950s and 1960s.
