Canastota Community Chest receives gratitude

The Canastota Community Chest board of directors has kicked off the 2009-10 campaign and has many thanks to those that have already donated or plan to donate. With the appreciation already flowing, past beneficiaries have sent testimonials to the Madison County Eagle with their response from working with the Canastota Community Chest.

In one of the letters, the Girl Scouts – Foothills Council, Inc., wrote to say how much the volunteers of the community chest are dedicated to helping others and helping their community be the best they can be.

“I would like to thank the contributors of the said Girl Scouts – Foothills Council, Inc., CEO Natalie L. Brown. “As one of the agencies that receives funding for our programs and services, the Canastota Community chest is significant in helping us to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.”
Every dollar the Girl Scouts receives from the Community Chest stays at the Foothills council and benefits local girls by providing innovative programming, events, anda camp program that fosters personal growth and leadership skills, Brown said.

The Foothills serves 4,275 girls and 1,510 adult volunteers. The program encompasses 3,125 square miles, the council covers all of Madison, Herkimer and Oneida counties, and arts of Ostego, Lewis and Hamilton counties. In 2008, the Foothills Council served 88 girls and 53 adilt volunteers in the Canastota Area. Throughout the year, Canastota Girl Scouts participated in a variety of different activities and programs on the troop, unit and council level.

One of those programs was veni.vidi.vici – the power of girls together, the Foothills Council’s fifth annual sleepover event. While there, girls participated in interactive helthy living actitivites such as scaling a 24-fott climbing wall, swimming and playing water games in the pool, dancing suring the 70s dance party, and participating in yoga. Canastota Girl Scouts also took part in many different community service actitivites such as making treats and toys fpr animlas at the Wanderer’s Rest Human Association.

“Thank you again for your contribution,” Brown said. “We appreciate your commitment to the next generation of leaders.”

The board of directors have the following agencies on the list of beneficiaries of the 2009-10 Canastota Community Chest Campaign: American Red Cross Madison-Oneida Chapter, Boy Scouts of America-Revolutionary Trails Council, Canastota Boy Scouts, Canastota Canal Town Corporation, Canastota Children’s Council, Canastota Recreation Commission, Catholic Charities Madison-Oneida counties, Celebration Children’s Center of Canastota, Inc., Community Action Program for Madison County, Inc., Girl Scouts-Foothills Council, Inc., Great Swamp Conservancy, Inc., Heritage Farm, Inc., Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., Jim Marshall Farms Foundation, Inc., Loaves and Fishes Hospitality Center, Madison Cortland ARC, Madison County 4-H Foundation, Inc., Madison County Children’s Camp, Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, Ride for Life Equine and Family Center, Inc., The Opportunity Shop, Victims of Violence/Liberty Resources, Inc., Wanderer’s Rest Humane Association, Inc.

The goal is most ambitious set at $60,000, and it’s because the board strongly believes in its purpose. Every effort is made to keep contributed dollars local and any donor can stipulate a specific agency and agencies to which they wish their dollars to go. This year’s campaign starts Sept. 1 and will conclude Oct. 31.
