Camillus police secure grant for WG schools

An emphasis on community policing and a good relationship between the Camillus Police Department and West Genesee Central School helped secure a $349,000 grant to enhance school safety.
The department was awarded the grant through the United States Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, or COPS. The money will be used to purchase additional security cameras for the school campus, for which the district is working to secure a vendor.
“We are fortunate to have such a good relationship with the Camillus Police Department,” said Superintendent Chris Brown. “We are constantly working together in the best interests of our children.”
The school and police have a history of collaboration. Camillus police officer Kelly Grace is the WG High School school resource officer and works with students throughout the district. Last spring, the Camillus Police Department, along with Fairmount Fire Department, staged a mock DWI-related crash for seniors prior to prom weekend.
The grant was one of 128 awarded to local law enforcement agencies and municipalities throughout the country under the COPS Secure Our Schools program.
