Holiday events on the horizon in your community

The Lebanon Historical Society is finishing up its first year of programs and planning for 2010. In September, Department of Environmental Conservation Forester Greg Owens gave a very well attended and received talk on the history of the town's woodlands and this past weekend, Lebanon’s veterans were given tribute with a wreath laying and pot luck supper. December will bring Santa to the Lebanon Community Club for his annual visit. But, the historical society has other things going on as well.

We will again be sponsoring the Holiday House Decorating Contest, with the winners receiving prizes during the Dec. 12 holiday program, which will be co-sponsored with the LCC. If you want to participate, please contact Penny Hughes at 837-4883 or Deland Niles at 837- 4835 and let them know if you will have a lit or unlit display, so the judges can view it at the appropriate time. Displays must be ready for judging by Saturday, Dec.5th. We are also going to begin an annual Photo Contest. Any photos taken within the year of people, places or events in Lebanon are eligible. All entries will be displayed and winners will be announced at the 2010 A-Fair, to be held Aug. 21.

At 6:30 p.m. Monday Nov. 30, we are going to deck the halls of the Community Club for the holidays. If you have decorations to donate or want to help put up the tree and hang some tinsel, please feel free to stop by.

LHS yearly elections are also coming up at our Jan. 24 meeting, at which time members can nominate and vote on officers for 2010.

Projects currently under way are the rehabilitation of some cemeteries in town and the possibility of installing a commemorative railway sign. These projects will entail receiving financing from grants and fund raising. A newsletter is also being put together that we hope will be both informative and fun to read.

Our wish list includes grant writers and a hospitality committee to help prepare for events and serve refreshments. The LHS is always looking for and has received several donations of historical artifacts from interested community members. If you would like to get involved with the educational and social aspects of keeping Lebanon's history alive, please join us at meetings and/or call for more information. So get your decorations together and write out your list for Santa and join the holiday celebration from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday Dec. 12. We will have yummy refreshments, crafts for kids, storytelling and wagon rides.
