Cicero waiting on numbers

The status of the Cicero Police Department was not a discussion item on Wednesday evening’s agenda.

But, that didn’t stop the board from talking about it or residents from making a point of speaking and questioning why a referendum has been pushed off.

According to Supervisor Judy Boyke, a flyer was distributed throughout the community misinforming residents about the agenda for Sept. 22.

“I am not prepared to ask the residents to abolish our police department without a viable solution,” she said. “Be patient as we move through the process.”

According to Boyke, the town is still waiting on information from County Executive Joanie Mahoney’s office regarding a possible merger with the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Department. While many have argued the town is in receipt of numbers from the sheriff’s department pertaining to the cost of combining the departments, Boyke wants official documentation from the head of the county where a merger is concerned.

According to Councilor Jessica Zambrano, the numbers may have come from the county sheriff, but the department does not set its budget — the Onondaga County Legislature does.

Councilor Jim Corl, liaison to the police study committee, argued that the issue has been ongoing since early this year and he thinks it’s important to push forward and take some action.

“It’s important to keep the issue moving,” he said.

While she agrees, Boyke said she is not going to put the safety of Cicero’s residents on the line.

Once numbers are received from Mahoney’s office, the town can proceed with enacting a local law contingent upon the outcome of a permissive referendum. Essentially, if the community votes to dissolve the department, the local law would make the dissolution possible. However, if residents vote to keep the department the local law to abolish would be null and void.

✓ The clerk’s office is in receipt of the 2011 tentative budget. It is available for viewing at the clerk’s office and residents can purchase copies. Clerk Tracy Cosilmon said she received a request for the working budget to be posted to the town’s website. While it is a public document, Town Attorney Anthony Rivizzigno said the municipality is not obligated to put it on the site.

✓ The board reset public hearings for an increase in improvements to Lighting District #3, The Birches, and also to extend a lighting district and increase improvements for Eva Circle to include Nates and Lana lanes. Both hearings are set for 7 p.m. Oct. 13 at Town Hall.
