Now the Vernon Verona Sherrill field hockey team has a chance to repeat as Section III Class B champions.
The no. 2 seed Red Devils earned that opportunity on a wet, windy Saturday at Rome Free Academy Stadium, where it fought past no. 3 seed New Hartford 1-0.
VVS had the advantage of being well-rested, having not played in more than a week, with a chance for players to heal from various injuries or sickness.
However, New Hartford was a familiar opponent from two Tri-Valley League meetings in the regular season, so nothing would be surprising.
The two sides played through a scoreless first half, with shots rare to find. Only in the second half did the Red Devils get a chance – and it took full advantage as Alexis Kavanaugh, off a feed from Briana Rascoe, flicked home the go-ahead goal.
That proved enough as VVS advances to the Class B final, a rematch of last year’s title game against Camden. The top-seeded Blue Devils beat Cortland 2-0 in the other semifinal and owns a pair of regular-season wins over the Red Devils. VVS hopes the third time proves different.
