A new prep football showcase event, the New York State High School Football Classic, will make its much-anticipated debut June 6 at the Carrier Dome.

The classic, which was conceived and organized by members of the New York State High School Football Coaches Association, is a senior all-star game between Upstate and Downstate players. Game time is 3 p.m. and admission is $5.

When negotiations for the annual New York-New Jersey All-Star Classic, formerly called the Governor’s Bowl, deteriorated last year, the NYSHSFCA decided it was time to create a new showcase game featuring the state’s finest players.

Liverpool athletic director George Mangicaro, a NYSHSFCA member who helped coordinate the event, said things fell into place once funding was secured. The additional support of Syracuse University head coach Doug Marrone was also key in landing the Carrier Dome as the site of the game.

While funding was the biggest obstacle for the Classic, the NYSHSFCA received support from a number of corporate sponsors including Under Armour, Time Warner Sports, ITS Sports, the U.S. Army and title sponsor Empower Federal Credit Union.

Empower contributed approximately $40,000 to the start-up costs of the event which was budgeted at approximately $78,000 for a 100-player game.

There was a need here because there wasn’t going to be an all-star game for New York athletes,” said John Wakefield, president/CEO of Empower.

Approximately 100 varsity seniors, nominated by their high school coaches or who signed a National Letter of Intent with a Division I or Division I-AA football program were invited to take part in the Classic.

The Upstate team is made up of Section II (Albany), Section III (Syracuse), Section IV (Binghamton), Section V (Rochester), Section VI (Buffalo), Sections VII/X (North Country) and Dick Diminuco of Alden is the head coach.

The Upstate roster lists a number of Section III stars. Among the local players scheduled to compete are: Marcellus quarterback Will Fiacchi (Albany), Bishop Ludden running back Omar Osbourne (Albany), CBA lineman Mackey MacPherson (Syracuse), Westhill tight end Tom Fisher (Fordham), Baldwinsville running back Malik Burks (Milford Academy Prep School) and Henninger receiver Cole King (Albany).

Players from both Upstate and Downstate teams arrive in Syracuse on June 2 for practices and stay on the SU campus. A banquet for players and their families is scheduled June 5 at the OnCenter. An underclassmen combine will also be held June 6 before the Classic.
