Skaneateles Rotarians get to know candidates

Thanks to the Skaneateles Rotary Club, three candidates for local government who are up for election on Nov. 3 invited voters to an evening of informal talk and discussion.
Jim Williams and Steve McGlynn, candidates for town board, and Terri Roney, candidate for supervisor, all spoke to Rotarians on Thursday Oct. 22 at the Sherwood Inn. Each candidate was able to share his or her thoughts for four to five minutes, which was followed by a round of questions from Skaneateles Rotarians John Hennessy and Robin Jowaisis.
The candidates were invited to the weekly Rotary dinner meeting to share their thoughts and answer questions in an informal way. Each candidate shared a little about themselves, highlighting their qualifications and specific talents to the position they are seeking.
Williams shared his goals of improving town and village cooperation, protecting the lake and other resources, and providing more opportunities for community involvement in decision-making.
Roney shared her goals of also hoping to improve relations between the village and town governments, finding ways for the town and village to consolidate services to reduce costs while maintaining the character of both. She also highlighted her goals of developing a maintenance plan for controlling milfoil, as well as trying to find ways among the town departments to be more efficient and save tax dollars.
McGlynn, who is running for office for the first time, described his race as “applying for a job” and supplied listeners with a resume. He also shared his goals of improving relations between the village and town, as well as having the Parks and Recreation Department of Skaneateles taking over the community center and all of its operations.
Those in attendance Thursday evening found the session informative and a great way to get to know the candidates.
The Skaneateles Rotary Club will be sponsoring another evening of Candidate Talks on Thursday Oct. 29 and have invited Steve Datz, Mary Sennett, and Rick Keyes to participate in an identical format.
