Two vie for 13th district seat - James Scaramuzzino

Erin Smith Wisneski 10/28/09More articles
There are two contenders for the county Legislator’s seat in the 13th district – incumbent Bob Warner and challenger James Scaramuzzino. The 13th district seat represents residents of the towns of Van Buren, Elbridge and portions of the town of Camillus in the Onondaga County Legislature.

The Baldwinsville Messenger recently interviewed the two contestants to learn more about their qualifications and why each is running for the position. Below is James Scaramuzzino’s profile and answers.

James Scaramuzzino
Address: 4 Comstock Road, Baldwinsville
Age: 46
Political Affiliation: Democrat
Political Experience: 14 years in government city of Utica
Professional Experience: 10 years restaurant management
Community Involvement: Parishioner St. Mary’s church
Family: Married, four children

Why are you running?
I am running for office because I think county government needs fresh ideas and new direction. I would like to see our children build a future in Onondaga County.

What is the number one issue facing the county?
Taxes. Currently the Legislators added a Motor vehicle registration tax. The national economist have said the worst thing you can do in this economy is place more tax on the middle class. I guess the Legislators didn't understand that the middle class is burdened with too much taxation.
Other problems:
Jobs. Here in the 13th legislative district we have two empty factories Syroco and Camillus Cutlery. Our current legislator hasn't even been to the county’s economic development office to devise a plan for these properties. How can we move in a new direction on these properties if no one is promoting them?

How do you propose to solve these problems?
The county needs to control spending, just like we have in our households during these economic times.

What county projects are you most excited about?
Unfortunately the project that concerns me most is the fact that the county legislators approved $100,000 in May 2009 to purchase land that guarantees a landfill here in the town of Van Buren. Large garbage trucks and littered road way is not exciting.

What is your position regarding Sales Tax Formula?
Increase in sales tax is just another way to take more money from the working middle class families that purchase necessities for their families (clothing, grocery, gas and, if anything is leftover, entertainment).

Why should voters elect you?
I am a working class family man with the experience to help county government change its direction to a better fiscal future.
