Family swim
Two evenings of open family swim will be held from 7:30 to 8:30 Tuesdays and Thursdays through May 13 at Baker High School. The fee is $1.50 per person payable each night. This program is for all ages; youth ages 16 or younger must have a parent accompany them and children younger than 8 years old must have a parent with them in the water. Shower facilities and changing areas are available, but no there are no lockers. Lifeguards will be on duty during the program. The fee is $1.50 per person, payable each night at the pool. No advanced registration is necessary.

Pee Wee basketball
This beginner-level program, designed to develop skills for fourth and fifth grade children, will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. for two sessions. Session I will be held Tuesdays (Nov. 10 to Jan. 19) at Van Buren Elementary and Session II will be held Wednesdays (Nov. 4 to Jan. 27) at Elden Elementary School. Participants will learn fundamental basketball skills and strategy, as well as experience intramural team play. Participants may choose one session or the other, not both. There is a $30 fee (includes T-shirt) and advance registration is a must.

Kids in the kitchen
A food preparation class for beginner cooks, 8 to 14 years old, will be held in two sessions from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturdays Nov. 14, 21 and Dec. 5. Kids will learn the basics of cooking and baking while creating their own delicious snacks and treats. There is a $25 fee per participant.

Fowl shooting contest
The Van Buren Park and Recreation Department will hold a family “fowl” shooting contest at 7 p.m. Wednesday Nov. 18 at Durgee Jr. High School to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday. The entry fee is one non-perishable food item per person (to be donated to the local food pantry) plus an additional $1.00 per every series of shots taken. Winners will be announced in the following age categories (5 to 8, 9 to 13, 14 to 17 and 18 and older) and will win a free turkey right before the Thanksgiving holiday. To register, call the Parks and Recreation office at 638-4727 by Monday Nov. 16.
