Kerry Ranger, a candidate who ran under the Conservative, Democratic and Independent ticket gathered hefty support by earning 1,584 votes, only to miss Miner’s mark of 1,636 in the Nov. 3 race. Kopp ran away with the lead by earning 42.1 percent of the vote with 2,341 votes.
Ranger's close fight for a council seat may be an indicator for his decision to take another shot at campaigning in 2013.
Kopp has been a longtime supporter of the town’s future. Letters to the editor sent to the Madison County Eagle expressed Kopp’s positive backing to local businesses and his presence in the community as a commissioner of the Sullivan Fire Districts.
“In my position as fire chief, I have worked with him to provide the best in emergency services to our community,” said Mike Sudol, fire chief of the Chittenango Volunteer Fire Department.
Other community members wanted to see Miner re-elected after 25 years of service to the community. His background and experience may have played a key factor when the decision came down to the wire in this year’s election.
In a letter to the community, Miner said he had confidence in the “change” that was happening in Sullivan and how the board he has served on has made those changes possible. Both Miner and Kopp will serve the Sullivan Town Council for four more years.
Sullivan Town Justice
Another close race in Sullivan, although uncontested, the hunt for town justice – had a showdown between two Republican candidates.
Residents had two incumbents running for re-election, although much voting action wasn’t necessary in this race, the town showed its support with 5,561 votes cast for the Nov. 3 election. John D. Button edged out opponent James P. Roman with 52.53 percent of the vote by earning 2,446 votes over Roman’s 2,210. Both candidates will serve for four more years in the town of Sullivan.
