Story of struggle and survival

Staff reports 11/06/09More articles
It was a dramatic evening of living history.

Aleksandra Ola Vesosky spoke of her childhood experience and her Mother's brave struggle for the survival of her family in exile after the 1939 invasion of Poland by Stalin's Army. This lesson in living history reflects the horror of what happens to civilians when armies fight to control or confiscate territories.

A portion of her Mother's diaries were published in the book titled “We Will Uproot You,” reflecting the strategy of Stalin in Poland, Lithuania and the Ukraine to uproot the indigenous peoples and replace them with Russian natives. The uprooted people were sent to Siberia and the Central Asian Republics to fend for themselves in an impoverished and inhospitable environment.

The informative meeting was held at the Canal Walk Café and sponsored by Rosemary Bucci. There were approximately 40 people in attendance.

Guest Speaker Aleksandra (Ola) Vesosky, left, recently visited the Canal Walk Café thanks to Rosemary Bucci, who sponsored her visit.
