B'ville student studies in Wales

Staff reports 11/06/09More articles
Stephen Raulli of Baldwinsville is currently studying in Carmarthen, Wales, as part of an off-campus program of Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva designed for students in many fields, but particularly those studying studio art, education, English literature, sociology and psychology, theatre, media and creative writing.

In 2008, Hobart and William Smith Colleges established an affiliation with Trinity College in Wales. Founded in 1848, Trinity has a student population of 2,200 and is known for its commitment to community engagement, which permeates its innovative curriculum. Raulli will have the opportunity to live and take classes alongside Welsh and international classmates. To facilitate engagement with the local community, all students must participate in an academic or extracurricular immersion experience; this may include a credit-bearing internship, a school practicum or a service-learning project.

Raulli selected courses from a variety of academic areas including community development, computer science, creative writing, education, English, media studies, psychology, religion, sociology, studio art and theatre.

Southwest Wales has been a cornerstone in Welsh history and culture over many centuries and its influence is still great today. Welsh is still spoken widely in this region. Located on the River Tywi, Carmarthen is a commercial center of nearly 20,000 people at the heart of a large and thriving area.
