Students compete in social studies video conference setting

Fifth-grade students at North Bay Elementary School and J.D. George Elementary School competed Monday Nov. 9 in a Jeopardy game using their Tanberg video conferencing unit. The purpose of the Jeopardy game was to assist students in their preparation for the New York State Social Studies exam, which will take place next week. Teachers at both schools said it this was an innovative way to help prepare students for the upcoming exam. Students were highly motivated to study, so that they would do well during the competition.

The questions used in the Jeopardy game came from the fourth and fifth grade social studies curriculum. Through technology both schools shared the game board and were able to see the other school. They even had an online coin toss. J.D. George won the coin toss and began the game. As each school took a turn, the students came to the board in pairs to answer the questions. All students demonstrated their knowledge of the many topics. At the end of the conference J.D. George came out on top, but all students played well. Each school congratulated the other on a game well played and wished each other good-luck on next week’s exam. They are planning on doing it next year.
