Chittenango Lions provide community with funds, services

Submitted by Warren "Pat" Jerome 11/15/09More articles
The Chittenango Lions Club, in its 38th year of service to the community, recently summed up its report to its membership for the year 2008-09. The 40-member organization of men and women worked in three ways.

The Lions took part in at least 16 work projects in the past year that included sponsoring its 35th senior citizen dinner, providing maintenance at the Madison County Children’s Camp, taking part in the Oz day parade, cooking dinner for the Dollars for Scholars annual fundraiser, working Community Betterment Day, maintaining the village gazebo and participating in the Memorial Day ceremonies.

The club also held a children’s pumpkin face painting event, collected used eyeglasses, helped on a Christmas basket program, provided the village with assistance on its new trail project, transporting the visually impaired and installed a new ramp for a disabled person.

The Chittenango Lions also conducted six fundraising projects during the year, including the Yellow Brick Road Run, its 13th annual Lucky Number calendar sale and fall and spring raffles.

The club was also involved in assisting with 60 financial donations to organizations in the community. Overall, the club provided $16,600 to 60 different organizations. To name a few, the Lions made contributions to the Chittenango Fire Department, the Chittenango Fire Department Auxiliary, Sullivan Food Cupboard, Madison County Children’s Camp, North Chittenango Fire department, Boy Scout Troop 11 and Troop 33, Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum projects, Sullivan Community Chest, Oz-Stravangaza!, Sullivan Free Library, Madison County ARC, Chittenango high School scholarships, Ronald McDonald House and the music, humanities and mock trail departments at Chittenango High School.

The Chittenango Lions Club has worked with a community who supports its efforts over the years. The club is always interested in acquiring new members. Please contact one of the following for membership details: Glenn Stevens at 697-9065, Jack Kern at 687-9547, Jim English at 687-6740, Judy Colbridge at 687-9652 or Jerry Vaikness at 687-6757. If you already known a Lion member, ask them for information on becoming a member or visit the Web site at chittenangolions.org.
