Cazenovia's teen medical missionaries save lives

David Reed 11/20/09More articles
Two Cazenovia High School students, 12th grader Kelsey Adler and 11th grader Lizzy Reed, have recently returned from a mission trip to the Upper Volta region of Ghana, Africa. They participated in medical mission activities as a part of an Eastern Hills Bible Church partnership with villages in remote bush villages on the Togo border from Nov. 11 through 20.

The teens distributed hundreds of medicated mosquito nets, helped in mass treatment of villagers for intestinal parasites, and gave community health talks, through African translators, to communicate with the villagers in remote bush villages on the Ghana/Togo border.

They presented several topics, including "where malaria comes from" (mosquitoes that bite predominately in the evening, and breed in standing water), the benefits of breastfeeding (reducing illness and building immunity in infants) and the importance on drinking clean water to avoid parasitic infections.

During the week Adler and Reed presented soccer balls and recently donated Cazenovia High School team uniforms from both the soccer and cross-country teams, luxuries that would never be affordable to teens living in a small African village.
