Canastota students trot for Opportunity Shop

The students of Roberts Street Elementary School hit the track running, or walking, for a good cause after school Nov. 17.

Approximately 80 students completed a mile long Turkey Trot, its first of its kind for the school, to raise money for the Opportunity Shop in Canastota.

“We always talk about this character building. I just thought what better time to be here in the month of November to teach kids that they’re not going to get gifts for doing something, but they’re going to have that feeling of doing something for another person,” physical education teacher Katie Barber said.

Barber added that the kids were excited about the community service aspect, asking if they had forgotten the recommended $1 donation if they could bring it in the next day.

“I think that’s pretty cool,” fourth grader Dylan McGuigan said of donating the money.

Although sixth grader Autumn Mitchell said she wouldn’t have minded if the trot was longer, she was glad about donation.

“I think it’s really helpful to families in need,” she said.

Principal Tracy Mosher thought the event was a great idea, especially combing the community service with physical activity.

“To be able to draw these kids in and keep them excited about those things, that’s why we’re here. We’re talking nine, ten and eleven years old. This is where you really have to draw them in so you don’t lose them,” Mosher said.
The unofficial count following the trot was over $150 raised.

“I think it was great. I think it was a great turnout,” Barber said. “They love to come and do this. The more we can promote them coming out and being active, that’s a great thing.”
