The legacy of the finger-style guitar playing is alive and well in Central New York with native son Loren Barrigar spreading his knowledge of the fretboard with the release of his latest CD “Chillaxin’,” the follow-up to his first effort “Dance With Me.”
A CD release party is scheduled for 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5 at the Elbridge Community Brick Church, Route 5, in Loren’s hometown of Elbridge. The event will accept a free will offering with “Chillaxin’”available for $15.
The story behind the title of “Chillaxin’” is as simple as it is complex - a term phrased by one of his friends, as ‘to chill or relax with ones guitar.’
Barrigar was asked to perform at a memorial service for Christopher Curtis Simpson in Virginia. Following the service at an after-party, some of the serviemen and women Simpson had served with had mentioned ‘chillaxe’ or ‘chillaxin’ as a term that they and Christopher had used.
“Of course,” reflected Barrigar, “I related the axe part to the slang for guitar. So on the way home I wrote a song called ‘Chillaxin’’ and put Christopher’s initials after the song.”
Along with the title cut “Chillaxin’ CCS”, the CD features 11 other songs, including eight Barrigar original instrumentals, the song “Brother John” written by Dusty Pas’Cal, and three songs penned by Austn Gravelding, “Never Felt Her Leave,” “China Blue” and “Devil’s Dance.”
The CD includes a bonus track called “Lydia Anne” that was written by Loren, His brother Kevin Barrigar and Peter Ryan.
“The song is about a pre-Civil War Lighthouse in the Gulf of Mexico in Port Aransas Texas,” explains Loren. “It features Kevin on vocals and the genius of Lloyd Maines on dobro-baritone guitar, accordion and percussion.”
Maines, a legendary producer, is a multiple Grammy award-winner and the father of Natalie Maines of The Dixie Chucks.
“The CD is a relaxing mix of vocals and instrumentals,” Loren said, “with a surprise or two.”
Barrigar has destinguished himself as one of the finest finger-style guitarists on a very large scale, having received accolades from many he has shared the stage with and his peers. He has performed with Stephen Bennett, John Knowles and his mentor Tommy Emmanuel, the Australian guitar sensation.
Loren has been in constant demand as a studio musician and produced Pas’Cal’s 2006 #1 rated CD in Syracuse “Home: the Loren Barrigar Sessions” and to rave reviews, his 2008 CD “Dance With Me.”
His finely-honed songwriting skills have landed his original melodies on NBC’s #1 rated hit “ER” and on a Christmas compilation CD with B.B. King and Patti LaBelle.
