“Why are we so obsessed with looks and beauty?”
The non-profit’s staff has been working on the event for several weeks, and invited the participating models to Café at 407 for brekfast and make-up and hair sessions this morning.
The show will begin at 3 p.m. at the Liverpool Community Church with a viewing of a trailer of the documentary “America the Beautiful.” Darryl Roberts, filmmaker of the documentary traveled from Chicago to be at the fashion show.
“I’ve never done anything like this before,” Roberts said.
Roberts has made two romantic comedy films before, and “America the Beautiful,” is his first documentary. He said the project came to life as he realized how he personally followed in the footsteps of stereotypes.
In his own experience, he found that he “was unable to appreciate the wonderful girlfriend" he had at the time.”
“Why did I do something so stupid?” He asked aloud. “Why are we so obsessed with looks and beauty?”
Although he was “embarrassed to admit” what he had done, Roberts said he was glad to “take something positive from his mistakes.” Roberts will also be featured in the runway line-up.
Acting as master of ceremonies, Joy Nash, an actress and body image advocate from Los Angeles, also made a long trip to attend an event she firmly believes in.
“I’m honored to be here,” Nash said. “I’m looking forward to the positive energy the room will be filled with."
Nash’s YouTube video, "Fat Rant," will also be featured before the runway show begins.
Tickets will be available at the door for $20. All proceeds will benefit Ophelia’s Place in Liverpool.
