The Skaneateles Garden Club and Historical Society teamed up June 25 and 26 to host ‘A Summer Place’ house tour and standard flower show in the village of Skaneateles.

The home tour featured 48 flower arrangements displayed throughout six homes on East Genesee and Academy streets. Tickets sold for $25 at the door and $20 in advance and atendees were allowed into the homes to admire the décor and arrangements. Guests wore booties over their shoes to preserve the homeowners’ floors.

On Friday evening, judges scored the arrangements, as well as the horticulture entries, which were on display in the St. James Episcopal Church along the lake. Ribbons were awarded in nearly 40 different categories. The show also featured educational exhibits on trees, the dangers of milfoil, rain barrels and teasel at the First Presbyterian Church.

“We were lucky the homeowners were so willing to open up their homes and participate in the tours, and the volunteers have been wonderful,” said Audrey Grant, housing consultant chairman. There were approximately 135 volunteers from the Historical Society and 100 from the Garden Club participating in the two-day event.

All proceeds from the event will be used for community projects and educational purposes. Projects include tree planting along Fennell Street, expansion of the Historical Society’s museum at the Creamery, educational exhibits, a $500 educational scholarship from the Garden Club, and other projects throughout the town.

“People don’t really know what the Garden Club does, but after this event, I hope they see that we give back to the community, and how much of a positive impact we make,” said Grant.
