11/03/09 Plato, Marguerite S.
Marguerite S. Plato, of Central Square, passed away on Tuesday Nov. 3, 2009 at Crouse-Irving Hospital in Syracuse.  Marguerite, better known to the family and friends as Marge, was born in Chaumont, New York and lived there until the family moved to Central Square in 1967.
While at Chaumont, and still in school, Marge became active in school activities, becoming President of the 4-H Club.  She won first prize in the high school speaking contest and played piano in the high school orchestra.
As an adult, after marriage and having a family, Marge continued in organizational work and music by playing for a local voice teacher, musician for the Chaumont OES and accompanied both voice and instrumental musicians.  She worked with the children of the Chaumont Presbyterian Church.  She was a member of the church and was appointed Elder of the church and a member of the Session.  Marge was also a member of the church choir.
While living in Chaumont, Marge worked at the Smith and Percy store in Watertown.  One year she worked at the Jefferson County Court House filling in for vacations.  She was the female lead in the Lyme Central PTA musical show.
In the 60s, Marge served as president of the Lyme Central PTA at Chaumont, working up to a state office as North Central District Director of the Parent Teacher Association.  She also served as President of the Lyme Republican Club, Chaumont Fire Auxiliary, and substituted in an office at the OES and was the musician.  For years she sold Beauty Counselor cosmetics and Sarah Coventry jewelry at home shows.
In 1967, Marge and her family moved to Central Square and they joined the Hastings Presbyterian Church where she again served as an Elder of the church.  For four years she was the church organist and choir director as well as treasurer of the church.
In 1973, Marge was appointed Deputy Clerk Treasurer of the Village of Central Square.  In a short time she was appointed Clerk Treasurer.  Marge worked with Mayors Milton Dunham, Donald Dixon, and George Traub.  She retired in 1985.
Marge was a member of the MIA and Central Square Senior Citizens groups and served as Secretary to both clubs. 
Marge is predeceased by her husband Francis H. Plato; two brothers Gerald E. Shaw of Syracuse and Harlan C. Shaw of Ocala, FL (formerly of Central Square); and a sister Loretta S. Ramsey of Cicero (formerly of Zephyrhills, FL).  She is survived by two daughters Sharon L. (Brent) Smith of Holiday, FL, and Karen A. (Ken) Maughan of Brewerton; one son David K. (Rosalie) Plato of Brewerton; sister Pearl S. Knapp of Boulder, CO; five grandchildren Michael Plato, Kirk Smith, Rebecca (Maughan) Gabriel and Trevor Maughan; three step grandsons William (Janet) Bell, Scott (Eloise) Coleman, and Don Coleman; and eight great grandchildren. 
Funeral Service:  11 a.m. Monday Nov. 9 at the Cicero United Methodist Church, Cicero.  Calling Hours:  1 to 4 p.m. Sunday Nov. 8. at Traub Funeral Home, 684 N. Main Street, Central Square.  Burial will be Tuesday, 12:00 p.m. in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Chaumont, NY.
