Phil Blackwell 12/23/09More articles
At home to face Oneida last Tuesday night, the Canastota girls volleyball team was challenged at many different points, but still beat the Indians in three straight games to make it 8-0.
Six straight points in the first game pushed the Raiders to a 25-16 win. In the second game, Oneida went ahead 8-5, but Denae Rinaldo's kill off a Jessica Patterelli feed led to a 6-1 spurt, and though the Indians closed to 20-18, Canastota got the last five points to win it 25-18.
In the third game, the Raiders again fell behind 5-2, and it was tied 15-15 at one point. But Stephanie Thornton put away a key point to ignite a 10-4 run that made it 25-19 and closed out the match.
Rinaldo backed up her 16 kills with 11 digs, while Patterelli mixed together 22 assists, eight digs and four kills. Sam McCarthy, with 17 digs, continued her fine defensive effort as Elizabeth Lavalee had nine digs and Katelyn Rounds earned eight digs.
Hamilton won again last Tuesday, flying past DeRuyter 25-23, 25-16, 25-14 to improve its mark to 7-1.
Tiffany Jones-Maxwell mixed in 13 kills, seven digs, four blocks and two aces, while Sam Martin earned three kills, four digs and three assists, and Kaitlyn Askew earned 10 assists.
Morrisville-Eaton also played on Tuesday, falling to Cooperstown 25-5, 25-14, 25-14. Rachel Morris had four aces, with Taylor Gallup adding three aces and Stephanie Davis picking up five digs.
Canastota will host several top teams on Monday for the annual Laidlaw Tournament, then resume its season Jan. 6 against Morrisville-Eaton.
