Chamber, MDA Merge to Form CenterState CEO
John Wells President and CEO of Interface Americas, visits SyracuseCoE's headquarters building, where sustainable Interface FLOR carpeting is installed. Wells was in Syracuse on May 11 as a guest speaker at the inaugural meeting of CenterState CEO. "A lot of bets are going to be made in clean technology," said Wells at SyracuseCoE. "This is the place to secure those bets." This inaugural meeting celebrated the merging of the Syracuse Chamber of Commerce and the Metropolitan Development Agency of Syracuse and Central New York to create CenterState Corporation for Economic Opportunity (CenterState CEO). Rob Simpson--a SyracuseCoE Board Member--is the organization's President.

SyracuseCoE-Affiliated Researchers Are Making News
SyracuseCoE-affiliated researchers--experts in SyracuseCoE's focus areas of indoor environmental quality, clean and renewable energy, and water resources--have been making news for their projects and accomplishments:

* Dr. Karin Limburg, a fisheries ecologist in SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner SUNY ESF's Department of Environmental and Forest Biology (EFB), has received the College's 2010 Exemplary Researcher award.

* Dr. Philip K. Hopke, director of SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner Clarkson University's Center for Air Resources Engineering and Science, served on a National Research Council committee that reports that US soldiers in the Middle East are breathing pollution from dust storms, vehicle exhaust, and emissions from open-air trash burning.

* Dr. Donald I. Siegel, a Meredith Professor in SyracuseCoE Platinum Partner Syracuse University's College of Arts and Sciences, has been appointed chair of the Water Sciences & Technology Board.

* The Post-Standard reported on a SUNY ESF student project supervised by Dr. Giorgos Mountrakis, to launch a weather balloon and test sensors.

SU-EFC Assists Puerto Rico, USVI With Solid Waste Management Program
In his leadership role with SyracuseCoE Partner the Environmental Finance Center at Syracuse University (EFC), and drawing upon his previous solid waste management experience, Mark Lichtenstein recently traveled to Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands (USVI) to engage with local solid waste agencies, citizen and environmental groups, and representatives from the private sector.

Lichtenstein was asked by EPA Region 2 Administrator Judith Enck to facilitate newly formed Recycling Partnership Councils in each island territory. Recognizing that solid waste management has reached a crisis level on the islands, Enck set up these Councils to help develop a sustainable materials economy that emphasizes the reduction of the waste stream in each territory. This project continues the EFC's mission of supporting EPA Region 2 (NJ, NY, Puerto Rico, USVI, and seven tribal nations) priorities and helping local leaders find cost-effective solutions to environmental challenges. As a result of the meeting, Lichtenstein and the EFC will help the territories outline financing solutions and work toward a successful materials management program.
