SU-EFC Assists Puerto Rico, USVI With Solid Waste Management Program In his leadership role with SyracuseCoE Partner the Environmental Finance Center at Syracuse University (EFC), and drawing upon his previous solid waste management experience, Mark Lichtenstein recently traveled to Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands (USVI) to engage with local solid waste agencies, citizen and environmental groups, and representatives from the private sector. Lichtenstein was asked by EPA Region 2 Administrator Judith Enck to facilitate newly formed Recycling Partnership Councils in each island territory. Recognizing that solid waste management has reached a crisis level on the islands, Enck set up these Councils to help develop a sustainable materials economy that emphasizes the reduction of the waste stream in each territory. This project continues the EFC's mission of supporting EPA Region 2 (NJ, NY, Puerto Rico, USVI, and seven tribal nations) priorities and helping local leaders find cost-effective solutions to environmental challenges. As a result of the meeting, Lichtenstein and the EFC will help the territories outline financing solutions and work toward a successful materials management program.
