Canastota village board adopts budget

The Canastota Village Board adopted the mayor’s $1.8 million budget for the 2009-2010 fiscal year. Residents will pay $10.65 per $1,000 of assessment, down 24 cents from last year.

Residents will also pay $4.72 per 1,000 gallons of water for sewer operations and maintenance and all or part of a $98 per year unit charge, regardless if they have sewer hooked up or not. This fee is based on how many structures are on the parcel. Vacant land owners will pay only a quarter unit charge.

Census takers
2010 census takers are out and about visiting homes and taking head counts in the Canastota area and will continue so through July. Mayor Todd Rouse stressed the importance of making sure the data is correct and asks all residents to cooperate.

Rouse said the information is kept confidential and can make the difference when communities apply for grants.

“It helps in a lot of ways,” Rouse said. “It’s important to get an accurate account.”

Census takers will carry identification with them, although they will not have picture ID’s. Local police departments have been notified.

Zupan grant
A public hearing was held April 20 at village hall regarding the Zupan Salvage and Recycling Inc. Restore New York Grant. No one from the public spoke.

The mayor said Louie Zupan Sr. and Louie Zupan Jr. paid the application fee for the grant and the village bares no expenses, however, the village will disperse funds if the grant is awarded and see to it the money is spent per grant specifications.

In other news
The board authorized the fire department to apply for the 2009 Assistance to Firefighters Grant in the estimated amount of $450,000 for the purchase of a new pumper with a five percent matching contribution on behalf of the village.

The board appointed Steven J. Lowell as part-time police officer based on a recommendation by Chief James Zophy.

The board will meet again May 4 at 7 p.m.
