World Cup: Compelling and Controversial

pblackwell, Random Thoughts
For a good long while, the World Cup being played in South Africa looked for a spark. Teams were ultra-cautious. Scoring was low. Outsiders (I'm talking to you, Europe and America) whined about the drone of the vuvuzelas.

Then France imploded, Italy could not even win a match, Germany and Spain suffered early group losses, South American teams swept into the knockout round and, yes, outsiders still whined about the vuvuzelas.

Meanwhile, the Yanks, fully expected to move out of Group C, hung on the brink the whole time, lucky to tie England and spotting tiny Slovenia two goals. (Yes, that call was bad, welcome to the rest of the world, everyone's had something like that in the past.)

Only at the very end did the U.S...

Revenge of the Continent

pblackwell, Random Thoughts
So a whole blog piece was spent waxing poetic about Brazil, Argentina and the rest of the South American contingent that made up half of the World Cup's final eight, and they nearly got swept out of the quarterfinals.

Brazil coughed up a halftime lead (it had never done that before in this tournament) to the Netherlands, lost its cool and cost Dunga a coaching job.

Argentina, which had covered up vulnerabilities on the defensive side for a while, got exposed by Germany, suddenly looking like the clear favorite to win it all.

And Paraguay, playing just the game it needed to against Spain, could not convert the crucial penalty kick - and paid for it later.

Only Uruguay slipped by, and even that was pure luck...

Weekly Column: Baseball's New Arm Race

pblackwell, Random Thoughts
In Major League Baseball, 2010 version, there’s little chance to dig the long ball because so few of them fly over the fence in an era of heavier drug testing.

Or it could just be the game inevitably cycling back to the pitcher’s mound. Either way, there’s been four no-hitters, two of them perfect games, and another that should have counted were it not for Jim Joyce’s worst moment of his life.

What has it all meant? Well, good races, everywhere, with some predictable characters, but also a bevy of fresh faces. Here’s the season so far…

AL East – Robinson Cano is making an MVP push as the Yankees inevitably rise to the top, at the expense of plucky Tampa Bay...

The New Toy...And What It Will Mean

pblackwell, Random Thoughts
Ever since I started doing this silly thing for a living, my work had always involved sitting in front of a conventional keyboard and a conventional monitor and typing up, well, conventional material, with the occasional nugget of wit thrown in.

All that changes now. Welcome to the laptop version - or perhaps more accurately, welcome to the 21st century on my part.

It still will take some time getting used to punching out tales of victory and despair, glory and agony, on this new set of keys. But this also opens some doors to some real fun in the seasons ahead.

We are changing a lot at Eagle, as you'll no doubt notice by the fall...

Amid Betrayal, A Young Man Shines

pblackwell, Random Thoughts
So in this week of NBA decision, a young superstar made known to the world his future intentions. He weighed the options, then chose what he thought was the best situation that would make him a champion soon.

And for that, Kevin Durant ought to be applauded.

What, you hadn't heard? Durant is locked up long-term with Oklahoma City now...

The Biggest Game of All

pblackwell, Random Thoughts
One disturbing aspect of our culture is that we have an interesting way of determining what a "special" and "defining" moment is.

But I'm pretty sure it doesn't involve announcing one's chosen place of employment for the next few years. The whole charade soared over sharks weeks, even months ago. And when it's over, what are we left to do? Cover actual sports?

Actually, it's not too difficult to do. A rather important sports event will unfold Sunday in Johannesburg. A couple of billion people will watch. Two nations will stop literally everything.

Of course, it's Spain against the Netherlands for soccer's World Cup...

Back On (Old) Course

pblackwell, Random Thoughts
Professional golfers first competed for a prize 150 years ago, at Prestwick in Scotland. A century and a half – quite a long span, but a mere pittance compared to the ages spent playing the game at its true ancestral home, nearby St. Andrews.

Knowing this, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, headquartered at the majestic St. Andrews clubhouse a short walk from the Auld Grey Toon itself, has made it a point to return its main event, the Open Championship, to the Old Course every five years.

And so we arrive in one of those years, 2010, and return to those ancient links...

A Month's Worth of Kicks

pblackwell, Random Thoughts
You can just about count on a whole lot of babies born in Spain in the months and years to come with “Andres” or “Iniesta” inserted somewhere.

Such is what happens when a player wins a country its first-ever World Cup with a goal in the dying minutes of extra times, sparing the global audience an excruciating shoot-out as the climax of the championship match against the Netherlands.

As with any large-scale event, reviews have flown all over the scale. Some have praised the winning Spaniards and the host, South Africa, for pulling it off without excruciating headaches...

The Boss Exits

pblackwell, Random Thoughts
Like it or not, he won.

Maybe that's the appropriate epitaph to put on the tombstone of one George M. Steinbrenner III, Principal Owner of the New York Yankees, who passed away this morning at the age of 80.

Put simply, George made the most famous and successful franchise in American sports a colossus once more. In his 37 years in charge, no baseball team won more division titles, pennants or World Series. And that's all he really cared about.

Popularity? Happiness? Stability? Please, that stuff was for the other franchises...

King Louis of St. Andrews

pblackwell, Random Thoughts
I truly wonder what people outside of the golf world will make of the 139th Open Championship at St. Andrews - or more specifically, what they will make of the man who dominated the week, one Louis Oousthizen.

With a gorgeous swing, plenty of length off the tee, a keen putting stroke and an amazingly calm demeanor, given the stakes, Oosthuizen styled a 272 at a wind-swept Old Course and left the field far behind.

It would be tempting to call the final act a bore - but let's face it, Tiger Woods did the same thing at St...

Good Times on the Links

pblackwell, Random Thoughts
So here’s a primer on what to do during the summer - when high school sports quiets down, temperatures go up and it’s a constant battle against boredom.

First of all, play golf. Then, play more golf. And when that doesn’t work, watch others far better than you take their best shots, in widely varied settings.

Okay, so some of it is pure relaxation, slumped on the recliner and drinking in the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, the Open Championship at St. Andrews and, in a few weeks’ time, the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits...

The Empire (Games) Strike Back

pblackwell, Random Thoughts
Well, at least for a few days, it's good to be back home.

No matter how much time I might end up spending in Syracuse (and it's been a lot), the Buffalo area will always be the place where I went from infancy to adulthood, with perhaps some growing up in between.

One of my earliest memories, when my family lived near Lockport, was to take that long drive out to Eden to see my grandparents. To get there, you had to drive on 263 past this huge complex on the right with the unlikely initials "S.U.N.Y.A.B." And yes, that's what it looked like on the sign.

It took a while to figure out that it was the North campus of the University AT Buffalo (don't say OF Buffalo, the SUNY folks wouldn't approve)...

ESG Day 1: From Sunlight to...?

pblackwell, Random Thoughts
It all started in such a wonderful way.

Wednesday night, more than 5,000 athletes marched into University at Buffalo Stadium for the opening ceremonies of the reborn (thank you, First Niagara) Empire State Games. They lit the torch, Third Eye Blind rocked the stage and the fireworks capped the evening. Best of all, bad weather stayed to the north and east.

And it was even better this morning - blue skies, sunshine, low humidity, time for the games to start.

The early returns for Central region teams proved quite mixed. Only one of four soccer teams won (the open women, 2-1 over New York City), while the baseball side took a pair of close defeats, one of them to Long Island in 10 innings...

ESG Day 1 Continued: Medal Rush

pblackwell, Random Thoughts
Just a few hours after we sent our first Empire State Games report from Buffalo, here comes a Thursday sequel, with medal news to report and a few more team results to flesh out the opening day's activity.

Start with swimming, and a lot of hardware coming home from ECC's Flickinger Center pool, including a trio of gold medals.

Ben Seketa earned one, the West Genesee star seizing first in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:08.77 to beat Ryan Kelley, who claimed the silver. Seketa, Eric Jorgensen (who won a silver in the 200 freestyle), Kevin Koh and Carson Elias got silver in the 4x200 relay, this following Elias claiming a bronze in the 100 butterfly.

On the women's side, it was even better...

ESG Day 2 Continued: Golden At Last?

pblackwell, Random Thoughts
On a second day at the Empire State Games that went from rain to wind to more rain to more wind to heat to humidity to a bit more precipitation and sunshine by the time it had run its course, Carthage's Tom Grimm may have performed an exorcism.

As night fell at Buffalo's Canisius College and a packed bleachers looked on, Grimm, of the Central scholastic men's lacrosse team, charged in from the left side and fired home the winning goal in overtime...

ESG Day 2: Soaked And Spun Around

pblackwell, Random Thoughts
Midday has arrived on the second go-round for the Empire State Games in Buffalo, and "Special Weather Statement" has entered the vocabulary. Not exactly encouraging.

That soaking rain arrived in the wee hours of a morning, and after a dry July people welcomed it around here. And when it let up around 7 a.m., there was a faint hope that things would return to normal - or, to put it another way, very busy.

Track, softball and baseball, scheduled to go in the morning, all waited for it to clear up. Field hockey did not - and Central, so impressive on day one, let down and lost 2-0 to Western, making the path to gold much more steep...

ESG Day 3 Conclusion: More to Bring Home

pblackwell, Random Thoughts
Finally, around 10:30 p.m., activity on Day 3 at the Empire State Games concluded as, in front of an overflow crowd at the Amherst Audubon Ice Rink, defending hockey champion Central lost, 3-1, to long-time power Western.

For two long years, Western, who won every title from 2000 to 2007, has waited to take the crown back from Central, who prevailed in '08. By winning tonight, Western improved to 3-1 in the tournament and merely needs to beat New York City to finish in front, leaving Central to fight for silver or bronze.

At least they played hockey (Western won the women's side, too, with Central going 1-2-2)...

ESG Day 3: Basketball Keeps Rolling

pblackwell, Random Thoughts
Aside from team sports that wait until tomorrow to finish things up, Day 3 of the Empire State Games is the last one of competition for athletes that came to Buffalo.

As such, the ones that work outdoors just want to get through the day uninterrupted, as the threat of storms is moving up some game times. But all is clear (or just cloudy) at this particular moment...

Meanwhile, we'll have two Central men's scholastic teams that will play for gold medals Sunday at Canisius College...

ESG Day 3, Continued: Comeback on the Diamond

pblackwell, Random Thoughts
When Thursday's baseball schedule at the Empire State Games concluded, Central's scholastic team was 0-2, frustrated by close defeats to Hudson Valley and Long Island, the latter a 10-inning affair.

Two days later, the story is quite different.

When Shawn Peake doubled home Tyler Mautner with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning Saturday afternoon, Central beat Western 2-1 for its third straight win.

And by claiming a three-way tie-breaker with Western and Hudson Valley based on run differential, Central moves on to a rematch later today with Long Island for the gold medal, weather permitting.

All those runs came yesterday - 23 in all - during wins over Adirondack and New York City that began the comeback...

ESG Day 4: The Hangover

pblackwell, Random Thoughts
So close, so many times.

Such was the frustrating theme for Central region teams chasing gold medals Sunday as the Empire State Games in Buffalo drew to a close.

Whether on the soccer pitch, the lacrosse field or the basketball court, teams in light blue dreamed of gold, but were nicked at the end and had to take home silver, four times over.

In one case, Central never even got a chance at the top prize. After all that rain fell on Saturday, the hope was that Central and Long Island would settle the ESG baseball championship Sunday morning at the Amherst-Audubon complex.

Yet the fields never improved enough for anything to happen...

Futures Arrives In Syracuse Again

pblackwell, Random Thoughts
Okay, folks, no more excuses. You may have possessed valid reasons for skipping out on the Duramed Futures Tour's Alliance Bank Golf Classic the last couple of years, with all the rain that fell, but that (knock on nearest piece of wood) won't be the case this time.

Gorgeous, pleasant, non-humid summer weather is arriving this weekend, so you owe it to yourself to make the short (or long) drive to Drumlins Country Club's East course to see the soon-to-be LPGA stars battle for possible tour cards.

Defending champion Jenny Suh is back after her 2009 playoff win. Each of the current top 10 money leaders, including no. 1 Christine Song, is present, too, as are Ithaca perennial Lori Atsedes and two more local youngsters, Jillian Fraccola and Mary Fletcher...

Futures Pairings Released; What to Watch For

pblackwell, Random Thoughts
A couple of days before they tee it up at Drumlins East for the Duramed Futures Tour's Alliance Bank Golf Classic, we now have the pairings in our hands for the opening round.

They start just before 8 a.m. off both tees, and by the time everyone is on the course, 150 players will be after the $100,000 in prize money, with $14,000 going to the winner - not to mention a big step toward reaching the LPGA Tour.

With that in mind, here are some players to follow in Friday's expected sunshine and pleasant temperatures..

7:50 a.m. - Fittingly, Ithaca native Lori Atsedes, at 46 the oldest player in the field and the most veteran of Futures pros, hits the first shot off the 1st tee...

Futures First Round Wrap-Up

pblackwell, Random Thoughts
Sure enough, no one would catch the 66 that Dolores White put up at the end of the morning shift of Friday's opening round of the Duramed Futures Tour's Alliance Bank Golf Clasic.

In fact, of all the players that went out in the afternooon at Drumlins Country Club's East course, only a handful even came close to White's total.

Jane Rah sits in the most precarious spot on the Futures money list - she's in 10th. If it were to end now, she would be the last player to earn her LPGA Tour card for 2011.

But there's still a month to go, and Rah can't sit back...

Futures First Round: A Surprise At the Top

pblackwell, Random Thoughts
Each of the Duramed Futures Tour's top 10 money-leaders have made it to Syracuse's Drumlins Country Club for the Alliance Bank Golf Classic.

So it wasn't shocking, during Friday's opening round, Cindy LaCrosse, no. 2 in earnings and the leading scorer on tour, worked her way to a four-under-par 67 at Drumlins's East course and was tied with Amelia Lewis near the top of the early leaderboard.

What was a shock, though, was seeing Dolores White, in just her fifth Futures event, lining up a cool 66 to move into first place.

Or maybe White was expecting some great. She had steadily improved through her first four events, cracking the top 20 in New Hampshire a week ago...

Futures Second Round: Major Separation

pblackwell, Random Thoughts
Come tomorrow morning, 77 Duramed Futures Tour players that survived the 36-hole cut of the Alliance Bank Golf Classic will return to complete their work.

But only three of them - or maybe just two - go there with a real chance to win, all because of what took place late in Saturday's second round at Drumlins East.

A late birdie binge has put Cindy LaCrosse, Amelia Lewis and Jane Rah far out in front, and it will take something remarkable from the pack to keep the title from this trio.

LaCrosse, fittingly thriving in a lacrosse hotbed, is in front, following up her first-round 67 with a bogey-free 66, Saturday's best round. She sits at nine under par.

Lewis is right behind after her second straight 67 to finish at eight-under-par 134...
