Wondering about

Award-winning columnist, photographer and news writer Ellen Leahy is back as the editor of the Skaneateles Press, in beautiful Skaneateles New York.

She is the former editor of the Skaneateles Press and the Marcellus Observer, and most recently the Syracuse City Eagle. She makes her home in Skaneateles where she is also a freelance photographer and caregiver for her parents, Bill and Marion Leahy.

She began her formal writing career as a columnist with one of her hometown papers, The Duxbury Clipper, in Duxbury, MASS. Born in California, she then moved to Sea Girt, NJ. She is a product of small town America - and the late great American Middle Class.

The photo at right is the drive down to Brook Farm off of West Lake Road - one of my former Skaneateles haunts.

Taking responsibility helps

eleahy, Wondering about

What did trial attorney James McGraw have to gain by trash-talking the late John Kelly to the press? Talk about kicking someone while they are down. What was the point in his slandering the two boaters who lost their lives on Skaneateles Lake July 8 of last summer? The two people who were left for dead and a fire and rescue department that was forced to hunt in the dark, after residents reported hearing the sound of a crash on the water, did not cause this accident...

Let’s walk with the wild side

eleahy, Wondering about
Okay, I am a country girl, spending most of my adult life in CNY’s countryside.

Last week journalist Nancy Keefe Rhodes wanted some action pictures of Onondaga Creek. I said, no problem. Even though I started as an urban photo-essayist, I can shoot nature. So, I started where Onondaga Creek crosses Route 20 in LaFayette. The water winds under a bridge and into the valley floor at this point. There wasn’t much going on. Not to worry, I drove up to the city and got off at the Brighton Avenue exit heading West to find the creek. I found it, backtracked, and then followed it to Armory Square. I could find no action, as the entire creek was lined on both sides with chain link fence.

This may not surprise city residents, but I couldn’t believe the creek was fenced in...

Finally, a good habit: - buy local

eleahy, Wondering about
You’ve heard it all before, but the powerful marketing messages of national companies often drown out the lyrics of buying locally. Choosing a local business, plain and simple, keeps more dollars in the community. In a global economy, being loyal to your community is more important than ever, because there are that many more communities fighting to take your often hard earned dollars.

Yes, if you choose a national chain, you are contributing to their payroll, which pays a lot of local people. Yes, these companies often pay property taxes and for many local services. But a large percentage of your dollar leaves Central New York forever.

For example, buying Dunk ‘n Donuts Coffee versus Freedom of Espresso makes a difference...
