Wondering about

Award-winning columnist, photographer and news writer Ellen Leahy is back as the editor of the Skaneateles Press, in beautiful Skaneateles New York.

She is the former editor of the Skaneateles Press and the Marcellus Observer, and most recently the Syracuse City Eagle. She makes her home in Skaneateles where she is also a freelance photographer and caregiver for her parents, Bill and Marion Leahy.

She began her formal writing career as a columnist with one of her hometown papers, The Duxbury Clipper, in Duxbury, MASS. Born in California, she then moved to Sea Girt, NJ. She is a product of small town America - and the late great American Middle Class.

The photo at right is the drive down to Brook Farm off of West Lake Road - one of my former Skaneateles haunts.

Subject: Look mom, I’m at Woodstock

eleahy, Wondering about
By the time I got to Woodstock the sun was setting. We were able to drive right to the large white tent where two computer networks were being set up to enable concert goers to send e-mails home. A Woodstock first. This was the night before the official opening of Woodstock ‘99 at the former Griffith’s Air Force Base in Rome.

Frank, a tech guy, and I were jobbed out from the Syracuse Apple Computer Specialist, Applied Technical Systems, owned by an actual genius, Richard Newman. Kodak had created a postcard template for concertgoers to use and had connected with Apple for communications. Frank and I were the elite Apple duo, rotten to the core.

A team of PC guys had been putting a network together for a couple of days...

The run for mayor: a platform of sorts

eleahy, Wondering about
I can’t believe I missed getting on the ballot. I really wanted to run for mayor, but I didn’t realize you had to be endorsed by one of the formal parties.

In the villages outside the city, you can make up your own party. Oh well.

Maybe I’ll just run my Lucky 13 platform by you, and see how it feels, in case I can get it together to run another time.

1. I want to re-route Route 81 - and instead of tearing it down, make it into a skate, walk and bike path as it winds through the city. I thought if we took the sides off and added some sort of see-through fencing it would be cool – plus giant pots of fresh herbs and vegetables might be a good idea up there (replaced with evergreens in the winter...

Finding my buzzword ... I mean skill set

eleahy, Wondering about
It’s that old familiar feeling – perhaps the one Tiger Woods feels as he cracks a winner; or Chef-restaurateur Mario Batelli as he watches his diners with looks of sheer pleasure after inserting forks full of his creations into their mouths. I had just changed the overhead light bulb in my octogenarian parents’ bathroom.

I put my all into this project...
