The what-might-have-beens.

Forgive me for being so very absent for so very long. The past month or so has been a bit of a whirlwind, and I think time got away from me.
But I've been thinking a lot.
Mostly I've been thinking of all the things that might have been, with just a slight change of circumstance. And I've been thinking about how little we really know or understand this crazy world we're supposed to survive.
I've been thinking about Imani Jennings, a mere baby, beaten to death here in the city just a couple of weeks ago, reportedly by a 15-year-old who used his fists to teach her how to use a toilet instead of a diaper...

Life...as we don't know it.

I've always been intrigued by the thought of life on other planets. That very question turned the A I should have received in a college history class to a C, and I still maintain, about 15 years later, that I was on the right side of the argument.
My esteemed professor had begun an off-topic monologue, chastising anyone who believed in aliens or UFOs (how it related to global history, I've yet to determine) and said man has made up the idea of extra-terrestrials as hope that some day we'll all be rescued by aliens. It was stupid, he told his rather dumbfounded class, to even entertain the idea that there was intelligent life on other planets.
I couldn't keep quiet...

Well, it's official. Baseball is over for the season.
Sure, there are games to be played. And, in some small way, I'll be rooting for the upstart Rays or Joe Torre's Dodgers to send the dastardly Red Sox home without a World Series title. But once Yankees and Cubs were knocked out, the season was really over for me.
And there always next year, right?
The Yanks have some big decisions to make over the coming months. Whether Jason Giambi, Bobby Abreu, Mike Mussina or Andy Pettitte return is a mystery. I think you could count on Pettitte coming back. Mussina's 50-50. Abreu should come back. Giambi's done...

Obama is not Jesus
Posted by dlovell | 09/12/08
I guess I should have been far less shocked to hear Susan Sarandon's take on the election last night. The ultra-liberal actress whose husband made headlines four years ago for promising to leave the US if Bush were reelected looked angry as she forcefully spewed the strangest words I've ever heard in the context of an election:
"Jesus was a community organizer. Pontius Pilate was a governor. That's all I have to say about that."
While strange, the words resonated for me -- and not in the way Ms. Sarandon intended, I'm sure. See, Obama is no Jesus. Nor is Sarah Palin anywhere close to being Pilate.
I've been struck over the past week or so at the attacks Mrs...

Obama's blunders.

I usually try to refrain from talking about politics in this space, but this past week has got me thinking a bit more about the presidential race, and whether the Democrats' annointed candidate is all he claims to be.
Issue One: Don't tick off the media.
Barack Obama and his supporters made a great deal of noise about how the candidate would eschew the normal media exposure and announce his vice-presidential running mate via text message to his supporters first...a bit of reward for those throngs who have dedicated sweat and breathless conversation to the campaign...

As much as I may have railed against the iPhone recently, I found myself standing in the AT&T; store, dangerously close to purchasing one last week.
My old cell died...really unfortunate, since I was planning to hold onto it until I saw something really neat that I wanted. I went to the AT&T; store, hoping it could be fixed, but to no avail. The only thing they could do was sell me a new phone. Before I could stop the words from coming, I heard myself blurt out "I'd kind of like an iPhone."
I went on to explain to the sales guy that I didn't like many of the things I'd heard about the iPhone, though I liked the idea of the device. Mobile e-mail, slick web browser, fun applications. The best touch screen available. What I don't like about the iPhone? Easy. Apple...

Why I'm not getting an iPhone. And you shouldn't, either.

I must admit I was pretty excited about the release of iPhone 3G. As an AT&T; customer, I figured, I wouldn't have to change carriers to get the coolest new gadget out there. And the $199 price tag seemed too good to be true.
So I looked into it. I love my iPod, but I hate having too many things in my pockets. Carrying a phone and iPod around with me just isn't going to happen. Put the two together? Awesome. Add a web browser? Even better.
As it turns out, getting the new iPhone isn't all that easy. Sure, it's $199 with a new contract, but you also have to spend another $30 a month for an iPhone data plan. No thanks. And the more I thought about it, the less interested I was in having my phone and iPod in the same place. Then I started watching the fanboys...
