The stadium's just fine, George

Understandably, I've taken a bit of grief for being a Yankees fan so far this season. At this point, I can't even force myself to type the Bombers' record.
Fortunately, it's the Yankees tradition that's more important to me than whether 2005's team wins or loses. Well, fortunately until now.
George Steinbrenner says he wants to build a new Yankee Stadium. Same name. Close by.
The Boss has to know better than that, right?
See, Yankee Stadium is part of American history. It's hallowed ground. It's grass and dirt that witnessed the greatest ball players in history capture the imaginations of children around the world. It's home to the spirits of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle. It's part of what makes the Yankees what they are...

I must apologize to Kevin Brown for a tough remark I made about him in my last entry. Kevin pitched a great game on Sunday. And he had the run support to give the Yankees their first series win since the season opener with Boston. So thanks, Kevin, for proving me wrong...

Drop the gas tax

Politicians have been complaining about gasoline prices for years. Now that prices are higher than ever before, each acts as if the government is hamstrung – bound from doing anything to provide even a smidgeon of relief to drivers scraping for enough pennies to help them get to work each day.
Funny thing is, Jeff Brown knows there’s something the state can do to provide relief, and he’s put it in writing.
What most politicians don’t tell us is that the state government actually benefits from increased gas costs. That’s because the state taxes gas sales at 4.25 percent. If gas costs $1 per gallon, the state adds 4.25 cents. At $2 a gallon, the state’s take also doubles, to 8.5 cents. It’s a shameful way to make more money...
