An open letter...

Posted by dlovell | 03/21/05

Dear Michael Schiavo:
I'm not fooled. I've watched the left wing jump to your aid, demanding that you be allowed to starve your wife to death. I've listened to your lawyer argue that those trying to save her from your plan are thugs who don't care about her.
Mr. Schiavo, do you really care? I wonder.
I wonder if you'll sit by Terri's bedside as she slowly starves to death. Will you hold her hand as she wastes away? I don't think you will.
I wonder, since you feel cutting off her food is humane, if you'd be willing to cut off her air, too. Would you choke off her breathing lungs? Would you place your own hands over her mouth and nose? I don't think you have the guts.
To me, your legal fight seems like one borne more of your own selfish desires...

We're good at something!

Posted by dlovell | 03/23/05

You know, I got thinking this morning.
I was thinking about Syracuse, and about what we do better than anyone else. I thought about the convention center hotel idea and the Destiny idea. I thought about the Below 40 summit and all the ideas that came from that. I thought about all the things I read and see from folks in Syracuse and in Central New York.
Know what? I found something we do better than anyone else.
No, it's not our hospitality. We can be friendly and accommodating enough, but we're nowhere near some of the real convention cities. We'll never be an Atlantic City or a Las Vegas. No way, no how.
I do believe, however, that we're No. 1 in the complaint department.
People here love to complain...

RIP: Mitch Hedberg

Posted by dlovell | 03/31/05

I can't tell a joke. My timing's bad, my delivery is awful.
I think I shared those traits with Mitch Hedberg. Except Mitch, somehow, was funny.
Was.
He died of a heart attack yesterday morning in a New Jersey hotel room. He was 37. Not much older than I am now.
I'll never forget the first time I saw Mitch on TV. I'd stopped in at my buddy's house to say hi and hang out. I hadn't been there two minutes when the start of Mitch's half-hour special on Comedy Central came on. I laughed non-stop for the next 30 minutes.
"I like an escalator because escalators can never become broken; they can only become stairs."
"I can't wear turtlenecks because it feels like I'm being strangled by a really weak guy...
